Multiplication & Division

Times tables are the doorway

Multiplication is repeated addition made quick, and division is just multiplication in reverse. Know the tables by heart and every method after them, from the grid to long division, becomes bookkeeping rather than guesswork.

This path runs from doubling and the first tables all the way to long multiplication and division, in the order that builds. Start wherever it fits and work along the line.

The path

Eleven steps, from doubles to long division

Each step is a short five-minute game. They start with doubling and the easy tables, layer in the rest, then move into the written methods that lean on them: short, then column, then long.

The foundation

Why start with tables?

Times-table recall is the single biggest predictor of how easily written multiplication and division go later. A child who knows 7 × 8 instantly can focus on the method; a child who counts up loses the thread every line.

Five minutes a day along this path builds that recall, then puts it to work. When these feel easy, the rest of the games by year are waiting.
