What Year 3 covers
The curriculum asks Year 3 children to recall the multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, both ways round.
It also asks them to use those facts rather than only recite them: missing numbers, sharing problems, and multiplying two-digit numbers by a single digit.
This game practises the parts that need to become automatic: the three tables, the division facts that mirror them, and scaling a known fact by ten.
Children who are ready for more can take the hardest three in 6, 7 and 9 Times Tables.
How to explain the 3, 4 and 8 times tables
Start with the doubling chain
The 4s and the 8s are not new facts. They are the 2 times table doubled, and then doubled again.
If your child knows 7 × 2 = 14, then 7 × 4 is double 14, and 7 × 8 is double that again: 14, 28, 56.
The 3s have no partner
The 3 times table is the one that has to be learned outright. Nothing doubles into it, which is why the 3s often take longer than the 8s despite the smaller numbers.
Expect this mistake
A child stuck on 7 × 8 will usually start counting: 8, 16, 24, and lose the thread somewhere past 40.
Doubling twice is quicker and it checks itself: 14, 28, 56. Say the chain out loud and it becomes the thing they reach for.
What comes after Year 3
The 6s, 7s and 9s come next, and the chain keeps going: the 6 times table is double the 3s, the same way the 8s are double the 4s.
The 9s lean on the 10s instead. Nine of something is ten of it, less one group: 9 × 7 is 70 minus 7.
By the end of Year 4 the curriculum expects every fact up to 12 × 12, which is why Year 3 spends so long on recall.
