This Stretch game is for children who are confident with shapes and turns. It introduces right angles, including that 2 right angles make a half turn, 3 make three quarters of a turn and 4 make a full turn. Children also learn the words horizontal, vertical, perpendicular and parallel. These are Year 3 topics. The game also has mirror lines in any direction, which is Year 4 work.
Make a right angle to test with. Fold any scrap of paper once, then fold it again so that the two halves of the first crease line up exactly. The corner where the two folds meet is a right angle, the same as the corner of a square. Hold it against each corner of a shape. If the corner fits exactly, it is a right angle.
A quarter turn is one right angle. Stand facing a door with your child and make a quarter turn together. After 2 quarter turns, you both face the opposite way, which is a half turn, and after 4 you face the door again, which is a full turn.
Types of line. Horizontal lines run level, and vertical lines run straight up and down. Parallel lines stay the same distance apart and never meet. Perpendicular lines meet at a right angle. On a door, the two side edges are vertical and parallel, and the top edge is perpendicular to each side.
Watch out for shapes that are turned. Some children look for right angles only when the sides run level and straight up. Test every corner with the paper corner, even when the shape is tilted.

In Year 3, children also identify whether an angle is greater than or less than a right angle. In Year 4, children identify acute and obtuse angles, compare and order angles up to 2 right angles by size, and find lines of symmetry in shapes shown in different orientations.
